    How to dual-boot your Hackintosh with separate hard disks

    Running Mac OS X on a Hackintosh is great, but most people still need to use Windows every now and them. That's where dual-booting comes in. Dual-booting is the process of installing both Mac OS X and Windows on your computer, so that you can choose between the two when your Hackintosh starts. If you want to dual-boot, the easiest way is to install Windows and Mac OS X on separate hard disks. This method is the most hassle-free.

    Real Macs dual-boot Windows and Mac OS X using Boot Camp, an application from Apple that allows you to install Windows on a separate partition from Mac OS X. Boot Camp does not work with Hackintoshes. That being said, setting up a dual-boot system on a Hackintosh is still pretty easy.

    If you are planning to dual-boot a new computer that doesn't have anything installed on it yet, I recommend that you install Mac OS X before Windows. The installation for Mac OS X can be rather finicky, so you'll want to do it first. However, if you have already installed Windows on one hard disk and you want to install Mac OS X on another, then just ignore Step 3 of this tutorial.

    1. Install Mac OS X
    Install Mac OS X; this part of the dual-booting process is the same with Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks. 







    NOTE: If you're installing Mac OS X after Windows, you will probably need to enable AHCI in Windows beforehand. Otherwise, Windows will not boot after you install Mac OS X.

    2. Run Multibeast and install your bootloader
    Installing "Easybeast", "UserDSDT", or "DSDT-Free Installation" in Multibeast will also install Chimera, a popular bootloader for Mac OS X. A bootloader is the program that boots your operating system when your computer starts. You can also install Chimera bootloader by itself, but that's usually not enough to make Mac OS X boot properly.


    3. Install Windows
    Unlike installing Mac OS X, installing Windows is pretty straightforward. Insert your Windows installation disk, and install Windows on your other hard disk. Then go to the next step.

    4. Set your Mac hard disk to highest priority
    Like Mac OS X, Windows also has a bootloader, but it doesn't work with any other operating systems besides Windows itself. Instead, we're going to override it with Mac OS X's Chimera bootloader, which supports both Mac OS X and Windows (and Linux, if that's your thing). We'll do this by giving your Mac hard disk a higher boot priority than your Windows hard disk; you can set this in the BIOS, which is basically the settings page for your motherboard.

    Restart your computer, and enter the BIOS of your motherboard. To enter the BIOS of your motherboard, you need to press a certain key when your computer starts up. On Gigabyte motherboards, you need to press the Delete key. Different motherboard brands use different keys; the key will probably be displayed on the motherboard splash page that you see when your computer starts.


    Once you've entered the BIOS, find the option for "Hard Disk Priority". On my Gigabyte GA-P67A-D3-B3 motherboard, this option is located under "Advanced BIOS features".


    Change the priority of your hard disks so that your Mac hard disk is the highest. On Gigabyte motherboards, you can change priorities with the +/- keys (you might have to use the +/- keys on your keyboard's number pad). Save the changes you've made (press the F10 key on your keyboard for Gigabyte motherboards) and leave the BIOS.

    NOTE: If you're using a motherboard that uses the newer UEFI standard instead of a normal BIOS, don't set your boot options to anything that starts with "UEFI". Mac OS X cannot boot in UEFI mode. Instead, you must select the boot option that starts with "P0", "SATA", or "Legacy" (depending on your motherboard).

    How to set up the UEFI of your Hackintosh's Gigabyte motherboard


    In their newest series of motherboards, Gigabyte has replaced the traditional motherboard BIOS with UEFI, a newer (and better-looking) interface for managing motherboard settings. The layout of the UEFI on Gigabyte motherboards is different from the old BIOS layout, and there are a few new settings that need to be changed to work optimally with Mac OS X. Rather than adding yet another section to our standard Mountain Lion installation guide, we've put together a separate guide to cover the UEFI setup process.

    UPDATE (September 24, 2013): This guide primarily applies to the UEFI on Gigabyte motherboards with the LGA 1155 socket-- this means P67, Z68, Z77, H67, H77, B75, and Q77 motherboards. If you use a newer motherboard with the LGA 1150 socket, you can probably ignore the sections on xHCI and EHCI.

    To enter the UEFI on a Gigabyte motherboard, press the delete key when your computer boots (before the operating system starts). Different manufacturers set different keys for opening the UEFI. You will enter the "3D BIOS", a feature exclusive to Gigabyte motherboards. From here, you can choose which specific part of your motherboard that you want to manage.

    However, the 3D BIOS is kind of annoying to use. Instead, click on the "Advanced" section in your UEFI instead (UEFI allows you to use your mouse cursor). This will lead you to a more standard-looking settings page.



    Before starting, it's best just to reset all of your UEFI settings to their factory defaults. On Gigabyte motherboards, you can reset your UEFI settings to their default by pressing the "F7" key. Once your UEFI is running on its defaults, you will have to change the following settings:

    Boot Option Priorities - Change "Boot Option #1" to your USB drive. You need to do this for Unibeast to work. After you finish installing Mac OS X, you should change this setting back to default, so that hard disks are the first boot option (this optional, but it will speed up your boot times later on).

    Unibeast cannot boot Mac OS X if you set the boot option to anything that starts with "UEFI". Instead, you must select the boot option that starts with "P0", "SATA", or "Legacy" (depending on your motherboard).



    xHCI Mode - Change this to "Auto". This setting is usually set to "Smart Auto", which doesn't work.





    xHCI Hand-off / EHCI Hand-off - Make sure both of these settings are enabled.




    Even though the UEFI supports using a mouse, it'll probably be easier to navigate through the UEFI with the arrow keys on your keyboard. Press "Enter" to change a selected option in the UEFI. On a Gigabyte motherboard, press F10 to save my changes.

    5. Fix the kinks
    Now, your BIOS will use the Chimera bootloader installed on your Mac hard disk instead of the Windows bootloader.

    However, even after you get Mac OS X and Windows to boot alongside each other, not everything will be in perfect harmony yet. Before you settle down, apply the following fixes:
    • Fix the time sync issue between Windows and Mac OS X
    • Enable NTFS writing on Mac OS X
    • Enable HFS+ reading/writing on Windows
    Once that's done, your Hackintosh will have a fully functional dual-boot setup. Congratulations!

    NOTE: On most dual-boot Hackintosh setups, you will have to choose the "System Reserved" partition on the Chimera bootloader screen to actually start Windows (not your normal Windows hard drive partition). This is due to the way that Windows usually installs itself on your computer.
